July 16, 2025Summer Is Here- Let’s Get Cool
There are so many ways to stay cool this summer. Today, we will share with you some fun, simple, and inexpensive ways to keep cool. Many of these activities both kids and adults can participate in.
A great way to destress over the summer is to enjoy some of the activities you enjoyed as a kid. Whether it’s fun food you enjoyed in the summer or activities that remind you of less stressful times, having fun cooling down is a great way to relax and recharge when the weather turns hot! So, have fun with some of our cooling suggestions this summer!
Stay Cool with Water Balloons
Water balloons are a summer tradition to stay cool when it’s hot. If you don’t want to help blow up water balloons, you can always use water pistols, super shooters, or simple spray bottles to play with your kids to cool down. We used to bring long-range super shooters on the boat during the summer, and when we anchored at Hilton Island for the fireworks, we would squirt other boats with our long-range water pistols. We also have fun with the kids in the pool, filling up super shooters and playing duck and tag.
Try a Slip & Slide to Cool Off
It’s easy to set up a slip and slide. You can either buy a ready-made one that you hook your hose to, or you can easily put one together with items from around your home. If you have a good-sized tarp and a sprinkler, you can set up your own slip and slide without buying one. A slip and slide is a great way to get kids out of the house on a hot day while having fun with friends. We have friends who attached a hose to their backyard slide and stationed a wading pool at the end of the slide for a big splash ending.
Pop-Up Pool for Pets & Kids
I have two Labradors, and they love their pop-up pool on a hot day. Just stand clear because water goes everywhere! Kids, adults, and dogs love water on a hot day. There are dog pools that can withstand dog claws compared to other pop-up pools and are available online. We add balls to chase and have also added ice cubes to the pool to cool everyone done. We have also set up overhead misters under our deck to have a place for dogs and humans to cool off when it gets really hot!
Make Your Own Popsicles
Buying a popsicle maker saves money and lets you create exactly the type of popsicles you and your kids love! One of our favorites is watermelon popsicles, so tasty and cooling. We’ve made popsicles from squeezed lemons, limes, strawberries, mixed fruit, root beer, and we’ve even tried making chocolate popsicles! Popsicles are so easy to make with popsicle forms. They only take a few minutes to make and usually freeze up, depending on the temperature of your freezer, in about 3-4 hours.
Try Skimboarding at the Beach
Skimboarding is fun and easier than boogie boarding or surfing. It’s similar to surfing but done in very shallow water, often near the shoreline or on wet sand. Skimboarders run from the beach, drop their board onto a thin layer of water, and then jump on their board. It’s fun, and if you are just learning, this sport is much more forgiving to your body than surfing. I’ve seen 3-year-olds skimboarding at the beach. Skimboarding doesn’t require a wetsuit and a lot of equipment, and it’s a great way to have fun at the beach at nearly any age.
Create a Shade Structure
Creating a shade structure can be as simple as buying a patio umbrella you like. There are so many options for shade today. Patio umbrellas come in many different sizes and shapes. One of the most popular is the cantilever umbrella with the mast at the back and the umbrella to the front. Outdoor umbrellas can be equipped with misters and also lights for evening, and can be ordered with these extras. Sun shades are also popular and can be easily installed between your deck and house.
Make Snow Cones to Stay Cool
If you like snow cones, they are simple and easy to make at home. So many online stores have snow cone machines, from simple and inexpensive ones to larger, more production-style machines. Kids of all ages enjoy snow cones, including adults. There are so many flavors you can buy to create the snow cone you like best. Flavors range from fruit flavors to root beer, and the machines use ice cubes or the larger machines take custom-sized size larger ice slabs. You can even make adult snow cones to cool off with at the end of the day.
Try an Ice Bath to Cool Down
If you don’t have a cold plunge in your backyard, it’s easy to make your bathtub an ice bath. Most people say to start with just cooler water, and then after you have used it a few times, try adding ice cubes to your bath water for a super easy cool down on a hot day. Please check with your health professional before taking a cold shower, cold bath, or ice bath for the first time. We have a stock tank in the backyard. We fill it with cold water, soak for a few minutes, and then jump into the sauna. It’s a great way to refresh your body.
