December 12, 2023The Art of Holiday Gift Giving
Over the years many of us realize that it’s not how expensive a gift is but how well it fits the person we are gifting that will be remembered. There is truly an art to creative gift-giving. We enjoy thinking of ways to give people memorable gifts and keep giving throughout the year. We share with you today some creative, simple, and reasonably priced ideas as gift-giving ideas for the holiday season. Each of these gift ideas can help extend the merry through the year.
Books & Journals Make Wonderful Gift Giving
I happen to be one of those people who believe you can never have too many books. I happen to favor books over Kindle, but if your gift recipient likes Kindle books, that is a great gift idea too. Consciously listening to what people are interested in will help you choose a book that a friend or family member will enjoy. If they have always wanted to explore a certain country, give them a book with great photos and information about their desired location. If they want to do a deep dive into any subject find a great author with good book reviews to choose a book that will be enjoyed over the year.
Journals are always a great choice. Most people buy rather plain journals for themselves and some beautiful journals are being created these days that make terrific gift-giving. You can choose a blank journal if they like to write and draw, a lined journal for those who like to just write, or a journal with prompts to get their creative juices flowing.
Classes & Lessons Are Wonderful Gifts
Knowing your friends and family there is probably a class or skill they might have always wanted to learn. This idea can also make for a wonderful conversation and give you some great gift-giving ideas. Many times, people want to learn something but haven’t taken the time or money to make the purchase. The list is endless for classes and lessons both for children and adults that would make great gift-giving.
Have the children in your life wanted to learn how to code, ride a horse, or learn guitar? Have the adults in your life wanted to learn how to make outrageous pasta, knit, learn woodworking skills, or create a sustainable living space? The list is endless for adults and children of incredible online or in-person classes and lessons that can put a smile on their faces and keep giving throughout the year.
Craft Supplies Make Creative Gifts
Any type of craft or art supplies make wonderful gift-giving. From sketchbooks to boxed drawing pencils, some gorgeous yarn with patterns to jewelry-making supplies, the list is endless when it comes to creative gifts. Has your friend or family member wanted to learn or deepen a particular craft or art? Have they wanted some beautiful beads or yarn that they won’t buy for themselves? Have they always wanted a portable easel but won’t spend the money? If we watch closely and ask some questions throughout the year it allows us to find some of the most fitting and wonderful craft and art supplies for someone, we love that will keep giving all through the year and beyond.
Cooking Kits or Utensils
Wintertime brings many of us ideas about baking and cooking that we might not do at another time during the year. The holidays are a wonderful time to give people cooking kits to broaden their cooking skills and the meals they eat. Helping your loved one change from plastic storage to glass storage containers, which they might never purchase for themselves is a great gift idea.
Gifting sustainable storage bags that can be used in place of 350 plastic bags helps their kitchen be more sustainable and greener. Giving them a yogurt-making and culture or proofing basket with sourdough supplies can be a fun gift for the foodie on your list. A gift could be as small as a beautiful antique oak ice cream scoop with some great recipes included in the gift bag. Sometimes the smallest kitchen gadgets are the most appreciated. I still remember the year someone put together kitchen gadgets for me for Christmas and it included things like a garlic roller, onion holder, and the most beautiful wooden spoons all stored in an antique kitchen crock that still sits on my countertop. So small gifts can be innovative and very much appreciated.
Event Tickets Make Gift-Giving Memories
Has one of the guys in your family always wanted to see a certain music group or go to a sporting event? Has your teen always wanted to go to a special concert? Have your parents wanted to hear a special author speak or go to an event at TEDX or the Commonwealth Club? These are gifts that can make memories for a lifetime and are so enjoyed by the people who receive them. Just use your imagination and listen closely through the year to what they enjoy but might not purchase for themselves and you will be on the trail to some great gift-giving ideas.
Old Family Recipes Make Memorable Gift-Giving
Most families through the years have some incredible recipes that have been passed down that make great gift-giving. One year I wrote a recipe book for my kids with all the favorite recipes they love along with the stories and memories about those recipes. This was probably one of the best gifts I put together that they have treasured going off to college and cooking in their kitchens.
It can be as simple as photographing old written recipes given to you by relatives and going on to Canva and finding a creative way to put them all together. Whatever the format digital or book form, old family recipes bring back memories and create new ones throughout the year.
Perennial Flowers or Wildflowers
Gifting perennial flowers or wildflowers are gifts that keep giving for years to come and beautify the living space of your friend or family member. This is the time of year, at the beginning of the rainy season to broadcast wildflowers and see them bloom throughout the spring and summer. Be sure to buy wildflower seeds for the specific area where your loved one lives so they have the best sprouting ratio and thrive in their particular weather and soil conditions. Perennial flowers are another wonderful gift that can bring beauty to their yard over the years and also attract birds and butterflies.
Have fun and use your listening skills and creativity when finding memorable gifts that will keep giving throughout the years. I have always thought that the giver has some of the most fun putting together creative and fun gifts people will enjoy.
