December 19, 2018I Can’t Find Anything to Wear
We’ve all been there, life gets so busy that cleaning and organizing our closet goes all the way to the bottom of our list and is about as much fun as a dentist visit. We are going to give you some great tips today about having fun, being creative and organizing your closet all at the same time today.
Once your closet is organized getting ready in the morning is easier and you usually revisit some great outfits you haven’t worn in a while that have you feeling like you found some found treasure in your closet.
Cleaning & Purging Your Closet the Fun Way
I know it sounds like a contradiction in ideas that you could clean your closet and have fun at the same time, but we will give you some great ideas that make the process both fun and creative.
- We have a great use for those Amazon boxes that keep multiplying somehow. Turn them into pretty storage boxes by cutting off the top flaps and decorating them with beautiful wrapping paper and adding a label. For the highly organized and detail oriented you could always color code boxes to the types of items they are storing. This also keep smaller items from getting lost and keeps your sweaters from being a leaning tower that topples over at the worst times.
- Store purses in a magazine rack or lid rack and be able to find your purses so much easier.
- Portable drawers in your closet help organize some of the smaller items, like socks, leggings, opaque tights so things are easier to find.
- Use a over-the-door hanging shoe organizer to organize small miscellaneous items that can get lost easily in a closet. It’s a great way to store scarfs, cowls, belts, and more!
- Purchase some see-through garment bags, it’s an inexpensive way to organize clothes and keep them fresh and clean. It also allows you to section off your closet to dresses, tops, pants, skirts, and evening clothes more easily.
- If you have a serious shoe addiction, try drop-front clear storage boxes, available on Amazon and many container stores or label your shoe boxes with what type of shoe is in the box to make finding your shoes easier.
- Try a hanging purse organizer, to get those purses off your precious shelf space and be able to see your selection better.
- Five shelf hanging organizers are available on Amazon and a great way to get sweaters off the shelf and be able to see your choices very easily.
- Instead of cramming heavy coats into your closet try an over the door coat hook organizer and find your raincoat easily in the morning.
- Using a belt hanger made like a huge U, makes organizing belts a breeze and they are available at Amazon and most container stores.
- I saw these and thought I’m ordering some of these. I’ve used cardboard in the past, but this is so much esaier for adding organization to your closet– wire closet shelf dividers, available on Amazon and at most bath and container stores. No more leaning and toppling sweater stacks!
- If you don’t want to organize by clothing type or if you do you can still organize within a clothing type by color or skip clothing type and organize your closet by color. It’s a great visual way for finding coordinating pieces quickly.
How To Know When to Keep & When to Toss
Now so good tips on how to choose when to keep items and when they should be bundled up for donation. Organization is one part, but if you still have too much stuff it doesn’t matter how organized you are, your closet will still be unorganized. So, some tips to make it easy on when to keep and when to toss:
- If you haven’t worn an item in 12 months, it’s time to say good-bye. If the item is vintage or a family heirloom then that is another consideration, but basic is one year of no wear and it’s off to Goodwill.
- Major headway can be made in underwear. You only need so many panties and bras even though a certain company would like you to think differently. 18-24 pairs of underwear and half as many bras is plenty. If it’s frayed or old, time to toss it!
- You can always rotate clothes in airtight bins that you store in your garage if you have seasonal items you don’t want to part with. I have a friend with limited closet space and she brings in spring and summer and moves out fall and winter clothes and using these move-outs as a time to purge her closet.
- Those items you have never worn or have lightly worn that you are parting with, sell those clothes to someone that will think they are a find! Everything from Facebook to DesignerSocial.com gives you a place to make money on your past clothing choices and free up closet space.
- Seperate out all items that need repair or take to Goodwill. If repairing, make an appointment with your dressmaker to mend and fix clothes you want to keep.
- Have you lost weight but have clothes that you love, make an appointment at a dressmaker and have her take them in. I brought 3 leather items to be tailored after loosing weight and have wonderful new additions to my wardrobe now!
- Organize your drawers with dividers and find that you can find things once again, plus your bras stay in such better shape!
- Use lavender packets in your closet and drawers to keep moths at bay and keep your clothes in top condition for years to come.
- For your more expensive leather shoes and boots, use shoe trees, or stuff the toes with compacted tissue and boots calves with cardboard to keep their shape.
