Celebrate Valentine’s Day Creatively
January 20, 2026A Great Rainy-Day Activity-Organize Your Closets
We have a lot of rain coming our way till March, and it’s a great time to organize your closets. Organizing your home’s closets allows you to declutter, make space for what you enjoy, reduce everyday stress, and make donations to charity. It’s truly a win-win all around.
We are going to help you tackle the different closets in your home to free up space and help you make daily life a little less stressful when you can easily find the things you need. We will cover how to organize your clothes closet, pantry, cleaning closet, bathroom, and laundry room. We suggest taking on one closet at a time. Also, some closets will be multi-day tasks, such as clothes closets and pantries.
Discover Great Finds-Organize Your Clothes Closet
Depending on the quantity of clothes you currently have in your clothes closet, this could be a one-day task or a multi-day weekend task to organize your clothes. Most of us would do best and not go on overwhelm if we take on sections of our closet as a task at a time. Whether you decide to do this as a one-day project or a multi-day project, the steps are pretty much the same, unless you are installing new closet shelves and all-in-one solutions.
If you are totally revamping your closets from shelving to drawers, the process will be different. If you are revamping, try to dedicate another room in your home for the storage of your clothes while you build out your storage space. This will make the project so much simpler. Whether you decide to use your current closet as is or build out a new structure, you would then follow these suggestions below:
- Go through each category of clothes and have a keep, donate, and discard pile. Have boxes on hand for both your donated items and your discard pile, so you are only handling items once.
- Sort your clothes by category: tops, pants, dresses, coats, jackets, workout gear, and shoes.
- Then organize each category by color, whether tops, pants, dresses, coats, or jackets.
- If you have the room, install a double hanging rod below your main clothes rod.
- If your closet is small, use your door space and utilize over-the-door hooks or hanging organizers for shoes, bags, and accessories.
- Invest in hanging belt organizers; they help keep your belts organized and accessible.
- If you don’t have dedicated shelves for shoes, invest in a good multi-tiered shoe shelf.
- Velvet hangers take up less space, but we tend to like color-coded hangers for different clothes categories, so items are easy to identify.
- If you aren’t installing a new closet system, be sure to invest in shelf dividers; they are fantastic for keeping jeans and sweaters well organized.
- Separate each clothing category into winter and summer wear to make items easier to find.
- If you have the room, use hanging organizers for accessories and use shelves for easily stacked items.
- Be sure to hang blouses, dresses, and pants to prevent wrinkles. Fold sweaters and jeans to keep them at their best.
The beauty of organizing your closets is multifold. You find hidden gems in your own closet, you lighten the load in your closet and are able to find things more easily, and you donate what doesn’t work, and the donation can be a tax deduction.
Organizing Your Bathroom Closets & Cabinets
Our bathrooms can get easily disorganized with our busy lives. Having a well-organized bathroom makes life less stressful. Organize your bathrooms first by decluttering expired items and cleaning, then maximizing space over the toilet, in cabinets, and bathroom closets. Focus on keeping your countertops as clear as possible, storing daily used items in the medicine cabinet or tiered organizers. I would start with your master bathroom, where this activity will have the largest impact on your daily life. Here are some strategies for optimizing bathroom organization:
- Declutter first by going through all supplements, prescriptions, and makeup, and throw away expired items and wipe down all surfaces. Be sure to dispose of expired prescriptions at a drugstore drop-off.
- Maximize space if you have a smaller master bathroom by installing a cabinet or shelves above your toilet, using wall-mounted baskets, and hang towels from hooks instead of bars to better utilize wall space.
- Consider purchasing tiered wire racks for under your sink and in your closet, if you have limited bathroom closet space.
- It’s best to have your linen closet in a hallway rather than your bathroom due to retained moisture.
- Use stackable bins and drawer dividers to maximize space. I use drawer dividers especially made for makeup drawers in my bathroom, and it helps keep everything well organized.
- Install a shower or bath caddy to keep products off the floor of your shower.
- If you have a large under-sink area, using sliding organizers can really help accessibility.
- Utilize your door storage area by using over-the-door hooks for towels or robes.
- I installed self-sticking hangers inside my bathroom closet for my hair dryer, flat iron, and straightening brush. A few self-stick hooks inside a cabinet door can really free up counter space.
Drawer Organization Tips
Bedroom dressers or drawers in your closet organizer can get messy so easily in the lives we lead. These tips work for both closet organizer drawers, bedroom dressers, and especially your kids’ dressers. A little organization can make day-to-day life so much easier. Try some of these tips to get your dresser better organized:
- Buy some drawer dividers. They are spring-loaded and come in many lengths and heights to accommodate nearly any size dresser drawer.
- Divide bras by type and color, and use a divider between categories.
- Divide underwear by type and color using drawer dividers to keep everything organized.
- Be sure not to store bulky items in dresser drawers. They take up valuable space.
- Invest in some beneath-the-bed storage containers to maximize space in a smaller closet for sweaters or sweatshirts.
- Fold or roll clothes so they are held vertically. Items are easier to see when they aren’t stacked on top of each other.
- Consider seasonal rotation if space is an issue.
- Be sure to categorize your drawers so you don’t lump items together, but that they have a designated drawer.
- The top smaller drawers are best for underwear, socks, and similar small accessories.
- Middle drawers work well for t-shirts, tops, and workout gear.
- Bottom and usually larger drawers are good for jeans, leggings, and less bulky sweaters.
These tips help adults, but they really help our kids stay organized when they can find what they need easily.
