September 20, 2024Fun Late Summer Activities in Sonoma County
We are going into the last four weeks of summer in Sonoma County. If you have lived in Sonoma County for a while, you know this is one of the best times of year to enjoy some wonderful activities unique to Sonoma County. We chose late summer activities in Sonoma County, that we thought you would enjoy, are inexpensive, local, and have you experiencing what makes Sonoma County uniquely beautiful.
Kayak Jenner Lagoon
Whether you are a seasoned kayaker or a beginner Jenner Lagoon is one of the best places to kayak in Sonoma County. Rental kayaks are available in Jenner from many sources or bring your own kayak or canoe to enjoy the views, seals, and birds that frequent Jenner Lagoon. You will soon see why Jenner has become a destination for so many people visiting Northern California. After kayaking have lunch at Cafe Aquatica or River’s End and sit back and enjoy the view and the gentle breeze that rolls off the Pacific Ocean.
For the more adventurous, gather some friends and kayak the Jenner Lagoon on a full moon night. It is absolutely spectacular, tranquil, and a magical experience. The full moon lights up the entire lagoon with moonlight and gives you some of the most amazing photo opportunities to remember your full-moon kayak adventure.
Visit Wild Flour Bread in Freestone
I drove into Sebastopol yesterday at 9:30 am and I took this photo. The line at Wild Flour Bread was long. Wild Flour Bread is a popular destination but it’s worth the wait for their delicious baked goods. On your drive to the coast on Bodega Highway through Sebastopol, take a right at Freestone and visit Wild Flour Bread. On your drive to the coast on Bodega Highway through Sebastopol, take a right at Freestone and visit Wild Flour Bread.
On your drive to the coast on Bodega Highway through Sebastopol, take a right at Freestone and visit Wild Flour Bread. They are only open Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday from 8 am to 6 pm. The early bird gets the best pick of the bread. They have wonderful wood-fired breads, scones, sticky buns, biscotti, and more. Once you have tasted their amazing breads this will be a destination on any drive out to the coast every time.
Summer Activities–Try a Star Party
Robert Ferguson Observatory is open to the public at least once a month, usually on a Saturday near the time of the New Moon for a star party. Robert Ferguson Observatory is located in Sugarloaf Ridge State Park in Kenwood. The cost is $10 per person and $5 for students and seniors. Children under 12 are free. A parking fee of $10 a car is also required. Docents set up their telescopes in the parking lot and share what they are focused on in the night sky, and lectures and videos can be enjoyed inside the observatory, along with their three main telescopes.
This hybrid Star Party/ Night Sky Trails is their combined version of these two events. While their dome and west wing telescopes will remain closed, they will allow small groups in their east wing to view images from our RC20, research-grade telescope. Sky tour docents are stationed outside to give guests laser-guided tours of the constellations. This is primarily an outdoor event. Bring a picnic dinner and make an evening of it at Robert Ferguson Observatory.
Find the Fairy Doors in Healdsburg
You may take the Healdsburg walking tour to seek out fairy doors in Healdsburg or you may purchase a map and take your walking tour of Healdsburg on your own. Both the walking tour and walking downtown Healdsburg on your own have advantages. The tour guides make the tour fun and informative with lots of historical facts and suggestions for activities that usually only the locals know about.
Buying the map and walking downtown Healdsburg on your own has its advantages, you to do some shopping, stop for lunch, go at your own pace, and take in some of the local wineries that have tasting rooms on the Square in Healdsburg. Either way it makes for a fun afternoon trying to find the over 25 hidden fairy doors in Healdsburg and enjoying a late summer day.
Add Taking a Farm Tour to Your Summer Activities
Soak up Sonoma County’s agricultural roots this summer, get a Sonoma County Farm Trail map, and visit some of our local farms. Farm Trail members list when they receive guests at their farms and you can see firsthand the agricultural roots that support our area’s economy and give us the luxury of locally produced food. Many areas throughout the United States don’t have local dairy, vegetables, wine, poultry, cheese makers, and ranchers. We have access to locally grown food year-round which is a wonderful benefit of living in Sonoma County.
Some farms are available daily during certain hours and others are available by appointment only, others open their doors annually for the Fall and Spring Farm Trail Events that allow families to visit several farms in one day. This is a great summer activity to do as a family so your children can feed baby chicks, take a creamery tour and see how cheese is made, visit horses, sheep, cows, and pigs, take a walk through a vineyard, taste fresh honey, and pick some wildflowers along the way.
Summer Activities-It’s Gravenstein Apple Time
You can pick your own Gravenstein apples in Sebastopol from mid-August through September. Drive down Bodega Highway and you will find signs pointing the way or do a Google search before you take the drive and pinpoint which orchards allow you to pick your own apples. Other types of apples are available in Sonoma County through November.
Grab some bags or some buckets and go apple picking. Apple picking is a great summer activity; your day of apple picking gives you local apples to make some of your favorite baked goods. Think apple crisp, apple pies, and apple butter. This is a wonderful activity to do as a family and make a day of it with a picnic lunch or a hike around Ragle Park.
Have Fun Blueberries Picking in Sebastopol
There is nothing better than fresh organic blueberries. Duckworth Farm in Sebastopol sells tickets to their blueberry-picking events. This is a super family-friendly atmosphere and a great place to take kids and make a day of it. They also have homemade blueberry ice cream for sale on-site.
You may join their Facebook group to get updates on picking events or sign up at their website. Duckworth Farm has a wonderful array of farm animals and many nice places to lay down a blanket and have a picnic lunch!
