Celebrating Halloween on McDonald Avenue
McDonald Avenue in Santa Rosa has been celebrating Halloween in style for so many years! They are probably best known in Sonoma County as an over-the-top Halloween experience. I wouldn’t go for the candy, but I would go for the outright entertainment value of the experience. This neighborhood in Santa Rosa is well known for its festivities, so plan accordingly. Go early, get your parking, and wear comfortable shoes. In the years I have experienced McDonald Avenue I would say that it is generally not the best for very young children, but great for older kids and adults, this is just my opinion. The decorations on McDonald Avenue border on the level of movie sets and are very realistic, maybe a little too much so for really young children. It is a great place to see amazing costumes and take photos while celebrating Halloween in style!
Music & Fun on Florence Avenue in Sebastopol
Florence Avenue in Sebastopol is best known for its incredible metal sculptures by Patrick Amoit that decorate the front yards of the homes on Florence Avenue. Come early, park as close as you can, and of course, wear comfortable shoes no matter what your costume. Florence Avenue and the Halloween celebrations that happen have started to be legendary in Sonoma County! Florence Avenue gets closed off to cars early about 5 pm and then is only open to foot traffic. Music, fantastic decorations and costumes, and a bunch of fun ensue on Florence Avenue on Halloween night. Go, enjoy, and take wonderful photos!

Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Cake Recipe
Two of our favorite ingredients are whipped together in one amazingly moist and decadent pumpkin cake. This cake can be made up as a sheet cake, bundt cake, or pumpkin chocolate chip cupcakes. The following recipe makes an 8′ x 8″ square cake, with the recipe doubled it will make a two-layer cake or a 13″ x 9″ sheet cake.
Ingredients:
- 1 stick butter, melted and cooled
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 3/4 brown sugar
- 3 large eggs
- 1 cup canned pumpkin puree
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract or substitute 2 tablespoons brandy
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 3/4 cup whole wheat pastry flour
- 1/3 cup milk
- 1 cup small chocolate chips
Directions:
- Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. Spray or use shortening to grease the pan and dust with flour or line with parchment.
- Whisk together the butter, sugars, eggs, pumpkin puree, vanilla, or brandy in a large mixing bowl till all ingredients are well blended.
- Sift the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and pumpkin pie spice.
- Stir in half the flour mixture into the blended wet ingredients, then milk and the remaining flour. Mix just enough to blend, and fold in the chocolate chips as the last step.
- Scrape the batter into the pan and smooth the top with a spatula, bake the cake until firm to the touch and a toothpick inserted comes out clean, approximately 55-60 minutes depending on your oven and pans chosen
- Let the cake cool and invert it onto a cooling rack.
- Cut your cake into squares and wrap the leftovers in foil and insert them into a plastic bag and refrigerate if you won’t be eating the remainder of the cake for a few days. This cake is also a great cake to freeze, defrost and have as a treat later.
